She was so close!
Mercedes Bolden and her husband were on their way to the Alabama Birth Center when Mercedes' contractions went from 8 to just 4 minutes apart. The couple made it to the birth center in time, but Mercedes couldn't even make it to the door before her water broke and she had to lie down on the sidewalk.
Midwives at the birth center were waiting for her to arrive, and although they don't typically have to work in the Alabama heat, they were ready to jump into action.
In just two pushes the Bolden's third child, Ivan William Bolden, arrived.
Bolden told WAFF,
It went by really, really quickly, so I didn't have time to freak out about the pain or anything.
She did, however, have time to think about what passerby's would think if they saw her, and noted that anyone around could definitely hear her screaming, but the screams were very short-lived, as Bolden went on to say,
As soon as he came out, I was just laughing hysterically because I'm like, no way. I had to FaceTime my mom. I was lying on the ground, and she was like, ‘What's happened?' Normally, when somebody is lying on the ground, it is because they fell and got hurt, and she thought I had fallen or something. So, I put the phone to him. And then my sister and her started busting out laughing.
What a whirlwind of emotions. Just look at the expression of pure joy on this mama's face!
I just love that the first thing this baby heard when he was born was the sound of his family's laughter…even if they were kind of laughing at him
