Look, we all knew at this point that this was true. Everyone knew it.
But it's certainly a relief to see this criminal hoaxer admit it — maybe she can get some time tacked onto her prison sentence:
More than 18 years after the Duke lacrosse allegations, Crystal Mangum admits that she made it all up. ...
"I testified falsely against [the lacrosse players] by saying that they raped me when they didn't. And that was wrong. And I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me. I made up a story that wasn't true ... I hope that they can forgive me."
Everybody listening to this confession right now like:
Crystal Mangum has been in prison since 2013 for the murder of her boyfriend, but prior to her becoming a convicted killer she famously fabricated rape accusations against several lacrosse players at Duke University.
If you can recall that crazy story from nearly two decades ago, you'll remember that Mangum, a stripper at the time, claimed to have been contracted to perform at a house party near the Duke campus; later she alleged she had been raped and beaten in a bathroom at the house.
An overzealous prosecutor led the charge against the players, but DNA testing did not link them to the crime, and Mangum eventually changed her story considerably, leading the prosecution to drop all the charges.
The case arguably launched America into the woke era.
You don't hate the media enough for lying to you for years and years and years.
It was all clearly bunk, so Mangum's 18-year-late apology is a bit of a moot point. It is worth noting that she tried to capitalize on the claims in the form of a book years ago:
(Me seeing that book like:)
A few more reactions:
The Duke Chronicle, meanwhile, notes that the "statute of limitations on perjury charges typically lasts two years in North Carolina law," meaning "Mangum can no longer be prosecuted for lying under oath."
I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believe in me and made up a story that wasn't true because I wanted validation from people and not from God, and that was wrong.
In spite of all she's done, amen to that.
