You may have thought that the whole "defund the police" movement was long gone, but one Texas town not only arrested its mayor last month but also just fired its last remaining police officer.
That's Hawkins, TEXAS, not Hawkins, Indiana, the fictional setting of Stranger Things, but it's still a strange thing for a town to get rid of all of its police officers.
According to The New York Post, the officer's firing was just the latest in a long line of upheaval in the town's leadership and law enforcement.
Lieutenant Eric Tuma was terminated from the Hawkins Police Department Monday on grounds of 'dereliction of sworn duties' and 'abandonment of post' in a split 3-2 Hawkins City Council vote that was celebrated by controversial Mayor Deborah Lynn Rushing, the reports said.
Rushing herself was already in hot water after a scandal erupted under her leadership.
This was the first city council meeting since May, when Rushing was arrested and booked on tampering with government records charges for allegedly secretly recording conversations with city officials and not making them available to the public.
Rushing had previously made an unsuccessful attempt to disband the police department.
So, if there are any criminals out there looking for some easy scores…
…you might want to head to Hawkins, Texas.
