Bad news for all of our "coffee" enjoyers who love their double caf-mocha-frappuccinos and GREAT news for real coffee enjoyers.
A major study from Tufts shows that black coffee, and it has to be black coffee, can seriously help you live longer and especially helps against heart disease.
The study, published online in The Journal of Nutrition, found that consumption of 1-2 cups of caffeinated coffee per day was linked to a lower risk of death from all causes and death from cardiovascular disease. Black coffee and coffee with low levels of added sugar and saturated fat were associated with a 14% lower risk of all-cause mortality as compared to no coffee consumption
Our fake coffee-enjoying friends who are drinking their milkshake versions of the caffeinated beverage essentially enjoy none of those benefits.
They may as well be non-coffee consumers.
Just like the snobs always said.
In the study, consumption of at least one cup per day was associated with a 16% lower risk of all-cause mortality. At 2-3 cups per day, the link rose to 17%. Consumption beyond three cups per day was not associated with additional reductions, and the link between coffee and a lower risk of death by cardiovascular disease weakened when coffee consumption was more than three cups per day.
The study took data from a stretch of about 30 years and measured coffee intake as well as how much of that sugar and cream junk people put in.
This is also caffeinated coffee, by the way. The decaf stuff is just not the same.
Once again, coffee purists are vindicated.
Sadly, the only thing coffee can't do is cure cancer.
No significant associations were seen between coffee consumption and cancer mortality.
And I know they say the benefits didn't increase past 2 cups ... but just to be on the safe side I might just drink a pot or two a day from here on out.
Doctor's orders.
