According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Manitoba man and chronic thief Michael Prince is suing the people who punched and kicked him to prevent him from stealing a car.
Here's what happened in his own words:
In his statement of claim, Prince says he was at Dino's Grocery Mart on Isabel Street when he stole a jacket containing a wallet and car key fob and went home.
Prince says that ‘after about 30 minutes, he decided to return to the store to steal the vehicle associated with the key fob,' the court papers say.
When he arrived, Prince found the car boxed in by two other vehicles. Prince entered the car, triggering its alarm, attracting the attention of eight or nine store staff who pulled Prince from the vehicle and ‘punched, kicked and hit him repeatedly' and struck him with a hammer, alleges the statement of claim.
The guy tried to steal the car even though it was boxed in by two vehicles, had an alarm, and was being watched by eight or nine guys.

Prince claims that even though he is an "unemployed labourer," the actions of the Dino's Grocery Mart employees have stopped him from getting a job should he ever, maybe, possibly want to do such a thing.
He also claims their actions have caused him fear, anxiety, and panic attacks.
But there are a couple of details that don't add up in this story (and I might be being a little sarcastic here):
Prince was arrested for attempted theft and immediately released, which is what you would expect in Canada, but maybe not if he were the victim.
More significantly, the Dino's Grocery Mart employees weren't arrested and charged with assault.

Canadian authorities didn't arrest the people protecting their property?
