It's only been a few months since they started showing ads on refrigerators.
We knew it was going to drive people crazy, but we kind of thought that was going to be a metaphorical crazy — more of an annoyance really.
As it turns out, ads on refrigerators are driving people crazy crazy.
A UK woman's fridge showed her an advertisement in bright yellow that said,
We're sorry we upset you, Carol.
Since her name is Carol, her first response was "My fridge is speaking to me," so she ordered a cab and checked herself into the mental hospital.

Carol has a history of schizophrenia and psychosis, so no one was surprised by her deciding to seek mental help.
That is, until Carol's sister posted on Reddit looking for advice.
I've finally got her back home a few days ago. However, when I was scrolling on Facebook today I saw an advert on a smart fridge which stated the words, ‘WE'RE SORRY WE UPSET YOU, CAROL.' It was set against a creepy yellow background and was very ominous. Upon closer inspection it was an advert for some TV show.
The television show in question is an AppleTV show called Pluribus, and the ad's wording is in reference to a character on the show named Carol.
That's my sister's name. Carol. I sent her the photo and asked if this was what she saw. She confirmed it.
Some creepy advert in a place where an advert shouldn't usually go has sent her to the bloody hospital and triggered a review of the efficiacy [sic] of her antipyshotics [sic].
It's a fair point.
Just a few months ago, our fridges didn't speak to us.
Now they do.
