The Florida jury in the case only deliberated for two hours.
After they returned the verdict, Routh stabbed himself in the neck with a pen, presumably in an attempt at suicide.
Routh, a construction worker with a passion for Ukraine and a burning hatred for Trump, set up along the fence line with a rifle while Trump was golfing in West Palm Beach on Sunday, September 15th, 2024.
After failing, Routh left behind a letter that read,
This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.
Routh fired his lawyers and represented himself in the Fort Pierce courtroom, rambling oddities as he did. Ten minutes into his opening statement, for example, Judge Aileen Cannon had to stop him because he was ranting about ancient history, Hitler, Putin, and Israel.
During jury selection, he asked potential jurors their positions on anti-Israel protests and what they would do if ... they saw turtles crossing the road.
Recently, he also challenged Trump to a life-or-death game of golf.
Routh now faces potential life in prison at his sentencing.
