On Friday, President Trump asked Congress to consider what can be done to help Nigerian Christians facing continued attacks from Islamic Fulani tribes.

Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN' — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!

Over 7,000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria in 2025 alone. Kidnapping is also frequently used as a terror tactic. Despite this, Joe Biden removed Nigeria's label as a country of concern in 2021.

Attacks have been ramping up for years as nomadic Fulani tribes in the Sahel region between Subsaharan Africa and the Sahara Desert massacre entire villages of Christians who have moved from the Christian-majority south.

The Nigerian government has been widely criticized as not being willing or able to help as tens of thousands of its people are slaughtered.

Trump's announcement comes after widespread outcry from voters and Republicans in Congress in the past few weeks.
