Justice Sotomayor is a big fan of gun control but I haven't heard her complain about the carjacker that got shot by her guards

An armed carjacker was shot in the mouth after attempting to steal a car belonging to Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor's security detail.

Here's how it went down.

On July 5th around 1 a.m., two deputy U.S. Marshalls were sitting on security detail in their unmarked service vehicle outside Sotomayor's house. A silver van pulled up next to them and an 18-year-old perp named "Kentrell Flowers" pulled a gun on them in an attempt to steal the car.

The two men were not wearing official uniforms, but they were sporting U.S. Marshals shirts.

I imagine that means they were wearing something like this:

One of the federal officers pulled his service weapon and shot the perp four times ... in the mouth.

He then gave the man first aid while the minivan drove away, charges state. The suspect was hospitalized and placed under arrest on suspicion of attempted carjacking and resisting officers.

Because this is DC, I'd usually say the guy will get off Scot free and maybe get damages for being shot by the Marshalls.

But, don't forget, this is election season, and the Justice Department has their tough-on-crime carjacking task force out prosecuting people across the nation.

Not to mention, this was a leftie judge on the Supreme Court. Violence outside a conservative justice's home is fine, but don't you darn touch a Democrat-appointed judge!

I think this guy will do time, at least until after November.

While the perp's story ends there for now, the events spawned a super thought-provoking thread on X that is worth the read. Let me include a short quote from it:

This story demonstrates something very important about the realities of violent crime, which is that we help keep crime numbers lower than they are because every single human being living in a big city dramatically alters their own daily behavior to avoid being a victim. Everybody knows you cannot just simply sit in your car at 1:15 in the morning without attracting violent crime. We all just live with that. We accept it. We change our behavior every single day to route around it. These guys were armed federal agents, so they felt comfortable doing it, but what happened? It attracted violent crime!

This is one of those truisms that's only ever talked about in far-right circles, but the truly enormous way in which we did this is that literally millions of people mass migrated out of cities into suburbs in the 20th century because they were fleeing crime. Imagine what violent victimization rates would look like had they stayed.

It's worth noting that Sotomayor is a fierce proponent of gun control for regular Americans who don't have security details, even as judges like her push for the laws that also increase crime.

Fox News notes:

The incident sparked criticism of Sotomayor's Second Amendment positions during her tenure on the high court, including one decision where she co-signed a dissent that said the Constitution does not protect 'a private right of armed self-defense.'

In that case, McDonald v. Chicago, decided in 2010, then-Justice Steven Breyer dissented from the majority which ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to own a gun against the regulations of state and local governments.

'In sum, the Framers did not write the Second Amendment in order to protect a private right of armed self-defense,' Breyer wrote.

Anyone who knows anything about the Founding Fathers knows that is insane. As one of dozens of examples, in his Commonplace Book, Thomas Jefferson quoted this passage from 18th-century criminologist Cesare Beccaria:

The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. ... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

Sotomayor apparently thinks that's wrong for everyone except her.
