According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft has just signed a $1.7 billion deal with Vaulted Deep to bury humanity's poop 5,000 feet underground.
Microsoft has vowed to be carbon negative by 2030 and, you might think that means they're reducing the amount of carbon they're using via their data centers, but you'd be wrong. What it really means is that they are spending billions buying carbon credits from companies such as Vaulted Deep.
Vaulted Deep sells carbon credits at $350 per credit and buries sewage slurry from cities deep into the earth where it won't decompose and release methane.
'We're taking different types of organic waste,' said Julia Reichelstein, co-founder and chief executive of Vaulted Deep. 'It's sludgy, often contaminated, organic waste that today causes problems above ground, and instead, we take the waste and put it really deep underground for permanent carbon removal.'
Each metric ton of slurry buried equals one carbon credit.
Microsoft bought 4.9 million carbon credits. It only costs Vaulted Deep $150 to bury a metric ton of slurry, and they have 12 years to bury the 4.9 million metric tons so, the deal doesn't stink for them at all — well, maybe a little.
And Microsoft gets to continue polluting.
While feeling good about themselves.
And since climate change is pseudoscience at best, nothing will change whatsoever.
On the other hand, getting rid of our sewage waste can't be all bad.
It's certainly a better idea than when Gates invested in burying millions of acres of trees to fight climate change.
